We hope you do not have to go there, but many people seem to be in need of subsidized housing. H.U.D. The federal department of Housing and Urban Development Has two Section 8 programs designed to provide assistance to people who need help.
One of these programs is a voucher program. If an individual qualifies for assistance they are supposed to be able to get a voucher, that follows the recipient, that they can take to any home owner who will accept it. In Michigan at least, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. There is a list of several pages listing the housing assistance programs of each city or municipality. Most of these will give you a recording that tells you that the wait list is closed. A very few will have a live person tell you the same thing. The live person may also tell you how many people are on their list already: Thousands from years ago.
The other program is tied to specific properties. The qualifications are about the same, but may vary from property to property. Warning: DO NOT WAIT until you need a senior apartment before you apply for one of these units. Most of them have wait lists of a year or more. So you need to get in the system early.
Another warning the maximum income allowed is often published in a buildings materials, but most also have a minimum income that they can accommodate.
There has to bee a better way to care for our parents and grandparents.
